The Social Equity Investment Project (SEIP) a program of the City of Burlington’s Community Economic Development Office; is an innovative social development resource created to help the city of Burlington address social equity issues which impact quality of life for all communities. The mission is to identify and support leadership within the community to facilitate sustainable and effective social change.

The SEIP will continue to promote an equitable city of Burlington for all…as well as identify methods to strengthen all communities. We believe these identified methods will strengthen our collective work and more effectively achieve an equitable sustainable community for future generations.

Situation, since the early 1980’s Burlington, Vermont has experienced a notable increase of ethnic and culturally diverse residents as well as social equity and marginalized populations who have not historically played a role in shaping a healthy community.

Presently, the increased demographic population shifts have begun to splinter all Burlington communities into isolated subcultures. To be socially prepared, Burlington has intentionally begun to cultivate leaders and decision makers who are responsive to and representative of all communities.Well received, the SEIP operates as a central vehicle for increasing power in decision making which impact Burlington’s quality of life while at the same time uniting non-profit, public, private and local government sectors.

Furthermore, the SEIP serves as a critical resource to social equity and marginalized populations at a time when increased health equities and the harsh realities of climate change now make clear the interrelatedness of the issues and rightfully demand solutions that heal both people and environment.

The SEIP long term goal is to emerge as a united force with the power to move decision makers and public opinion towards an equitable city of Burlington where all populations are engaged in shaping a valued and preferred future.
